Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY): Returns, Rules, and Eligibility

Last Updated: 2026-06-27 6 min read

For parents of a daughter in India, planning for her future education and wedding is a primary long-term financial milestone. To support parents in building this reserve, the Government of India launched the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) as part of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

SSY is a dedicated savings scheme that offers two major advantages: the safety of a sovereign guarantee and the highest interest rate among all government-backed small savings schemes. Combined with its Exempt-Exempt-Exempt (EEE) tax status, SSY stands out as a powerful debt compounding tool.

This guide explains the rules, eligibility criteria, and withdrawal parameters of the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and demonstrates the compounding math of its returns.

1. SSY Eligibility & Account Opening Rules

To open an SSY account, you must satisfy the following conditions:

  • Age Limit: The account can only be opened by a parent or legal guardian in the name of a girl child who is under the age of 10 years.
  • Number of Accounts: Only one account is allowed per girl child. A family can open a maximum of two accounts (for two daughters). Exceptions are made in the case of twins or triplets born in the second birth.
  • Deposit Limits: The minimum deposit required is ₹250 per financial year, and the maximum deposit is capped at ₹1,50,000 per year. Deposits must be made for a period of 15 years from the date of account opening.

2. Interest Rates & EEE Tax Status (2026)

The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana carries excellent financial benefits:

  • 2026 Interest Rate: For the current quarters of 2026, the government has set the SSY interest rate at 8.20% per annum. This interest is compounded annually and credited on March 31st of each year.
  • EEE Tax Status:
    1. Exempt (Contributions): Deposits up to ₹1.5 Lakhs qualify for a tax deduction under Section 80C (under the Old Tax Regime).
    2. Exempt (Accumulation): The annual interest earned compounds inside the account completely tax-free.
    3. Exempt (Withdrawal): The entire maturity corpus is 100% tax-free when withdrawn.

3. Maturity & Withdrawal Timelines

The SSY account is structured as a very long-term vehicle to match the timeline of a child’s transition to adulthood:

  • Account Maturity: The account matures 21 years from the date of opening, or when the girl child gets married after attaining the age of 18 (whichever happens first).
  • Educational Withdrawals: To fund higher education, parents can withdraw up to 50% of the accumulated balance once the girl child reaches 18 years of age or completes the 10th standard. Proof of admission must be provided to the bank or post office.

4. The Math: Compounding ₹1.5 Lakhs Annually

Let’s look at the compounding mathematics. Suppose you open an SSY account for your newborn daughter and invest the maximum limit of ₹1,50,000 on April 1st every year for the required 15 years.

Assuming the interest rate remains constant at 8.20% per annum throughout the tenure:

  • Years 1 to 15 (Investment Phase):
    • You deposit ₹1.5 Lakhs every year for 15 years.
    • Total Principal Invested: ₹22,50,000
    • Value of account at the end of Year 15: ₹44,89,690
  • Years 16 to 21 (Compounding Phase):
    • You make zero fresh deposits during these 6 years.
    • The outstanding balance of ₹44.89 Lakhs continues to compound at 8.20% per annum for another 6 years.
  • Year 21 (Maturity):
    • Final Maturity Corpus: ~₹71,94,800 (nearly ₹72 Lakhs!)
    • Total Interest Earned: ₹49,44,800 (completely tax-free)

By investing ₹22.5 Lakhs over 15 years, the power of compound interest turns your capital into nearly ₹72 Lakhs by the time your daughter is ready for higher education or marriage.

5. Verdict: Who Should Open an SSY Account?

If you have a daughter under the age of 10, opening an SSY account is highly recommended as a core debt asset.

An 8.20% tax-free return backed by a sovereign guarantee is superior to bank FDs and even the Public Provident Fund (PPF), which currently offers 7.10%. However, because of the strict 15-year payment lock-in and 21-year maturity timeline, you should only invest money that you do not need for emergency liquidity.
